ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team dropped a home contest Friday evening, 15-9, to the visiting Marist Red Foxes.
Winthrop (2-5) fell behind early as Marist got off to a hot start offensively. The Red Foxes (4-3) scored six of the first seven goals to take a 6-1 advantage with 18:44 on the clock. The lone Eagle tally came from the stick of Nicole Beatson.
Despite the deficit, the Eagles rallied back, scoring four of the next five, pulling within 7-5 with 9:28 on the clock. Katie Clark, Kristen Shriver, Katherine Judge and Ellie Marindin provided the offense for the Eagles. Over the final seven minutes of the half, Marist increased its lead to 10-5. Winthrop grabbed the final tally, pulling back to within 10-6 as Bianca Tedesco found the back of the net.
Judge and Tedesco got the Eagles off to a strong start at the onset of the second half as Winthrop pulled within two 10-8 with 23:41 remaining. The Red Foxes had a quick response, getting their lead back to four with 20:39 left in the contest.
After a more than eight-minute scoring drought, Beatson tallied another goal for the Eagles, making the score 2-9 with 12:18 on the clock. It was, however, the last goal the Eagles scored as Marist added three more to reach the 15-9 final.
Judge, Beatson and Tedesco each finished with two goals. Judge also led the team with seven ground balls while Shriver corralled three draw controls. Goalie Chloe Wormsley finished with nine saves including seven in the second half.
The Eagles return to Eagle Field for a 2 p.m. contest Sunday against the Davidson Wildcats.
