ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team returns home for a pair of contests this weekend, hosting Marist and Davidson at Eagle Field.
The Eagles welcome the Marist Red Foxes Friday evening at 5 p.m. while the Davidson Wildcats will come to Eagle Field for a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.
Winthrop has dropped two straight contests and fell on Wednesday afternoon the fourth-ranked Colorado Buffaloes. Junior transfer Nicole Beatson has been a scoring force for the Eagles, tallying 18 goals while assisting on six others through six games this season. Katie Clark has tallied nine goals while Kristen Shriver has added eight.
Katherine Judge has been strong on both ends of the field as she has scored seven goals while also leading the team in draw controls with 25 and caused turnovers with 11. Freshman goalie Chloe Wormsley leads the team with 20 ground balls and has averaged just over six saves per game this season.
Marist makes its first trip to Rock Hill Friday with a 3-3 overall record and last played on March 11, coming away with a 15-10 victory over Sacred Heart. The Red Foxes have three players with double-digit goals this season, led by Samantha Mehalick who leads the team with 13 goals. Abigail Witczak has played all six games in goal this season, allowing just shy of 13 goals a game.
Davidson enters Sunday's contest with a 2-3 overall record, having dropped its last two contests. The Wildcats fell to Campbell 9-8 on March 12. Annie Brockett leads Davidson in scoring this year with 16 goals and also has two assists. Rose Woolson has been the primary netminder for the Wildcats allowing 10.89 goals per game while saving 50 percent of shots against her.
Following the weekend home series, the Eagles will hit the road for four straight contests. Winthrop will close out its non-conference schedule at Cincinnati on March 24 and Michigan on March 26.
