Box Score TUSCALOOSA, AL--Winthrop softball gave #8/11 Alabama all it can handle in a 1-0 loss, Wednesday afternoon at Rhoads Stadium.
The game was tied 0-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh when the Tide loaded the bases and won the game on walk-off single by Chandler Dare to right field as the Eagles are now 11-14 and Alabama improves to 25-2. This was the final tune-up for the Eagles, who will open up Big South Conference action this weekend by hosting Presbyterian College in a three-game series. The series will begin on Saturday, Mar. 18 at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader and conclude with a single-game on Sunday at 1 p.m
"Today we showed what kind of ball team we really are," said Winthrop co-head coach
Mark Cooke. "These kids went out and played as hard as they can. Keleigh (Romine) pitched a heck of a ball game. What was nice is that we played and showed the level of the ability we have with this team. I'm very proud of them and it's a good spring board leading into conference play."
Romine tossed a complete game allowing just one run on five hits as she falls to 2-4 on the year recorded her second complete game of the season. Alabama's Sydney Littlejohn also threw a complete game as she allowed four hits with a walk and a career-high 14 strikeouts.
Maddie Antone finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate as she increases her season to average to .415 and
Morgan Lowers finished 1-for-3.
Winthrop threatened in the top of the first inning when
Paige Haley walked to get things started and two batters later Antone singled to left. However, Littlejohn struck out
Leah Young and Lowers to end the threat.
