JACKSONVILLE, AL—Winthrop softball fell 5-3 at Jacksonville State, Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles were supposed to play a doubleheader but were limited to one game due to weather conditions as they fall to 11-13 overall and Jacksonville State improves to 15-7. The Eagles will be back in action Wednesday when they travel up the road to take on #8/11 Alabama at 2:30 p.m. (EST).
"We lost to a very good team," said Winthrop co-head coach
Mark Cooke. "They just out hit us with runners in scoring position."
With the game tied 3-3 in the fifth, the Gamecocks scored the go-ahead run on an RBI double down the right field line by Jamie McGuire. That came after Winthrop had stranded two runners in the top of the inning. For the game the Eagles finished with 10 runners left on base.
Winthrop grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when
Paige Haley led off the game with a double and then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Maddie Antone.
Jacksonville State tied the game in the bottom half of the first but Winthrop jumped back on top in the second.
Sabrina Shroades got things started with a single up the middle and then reached second on a misplayed ball off the bat of
Brooke Ellison. Haley reached base again with a single to left center that loaded the bases.
Shayna Covington put the Eagles up 2-1 with a single to first and then Ellison scored on a fielding error to make it 3-1.
Jacksonville State added a run in the bottom of the second with a home run by Taylor Rogers and then tied the game in the third inning.
Keleigh Romine started the game in the circle for the Eagles, but left after three batters when she took one off the shin. Shroades relieved her and took the loss to fall to 2-1 as she allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with a walk and a strikeout. Haley, Covington and Shroades all finished with two hits each.
