Softball Drops One-Run Games To Delaware, UNCG Saturday Afternoon

Young Has Multiple Hits In Four Of The Last Seven Games

GREENSBORO, NC— Winthrop softball suffered a couple of one-run losses Saturday afternoon as it fell 5-4 to Delaware and 4-3 to UNC Greensboro.

The Eagles have lost four straight and are now 11-12 on the season. Winthrop will be back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 14 at Jacksonville State with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.

"We allowed four runs in the first two innings against UNCG and then played good the rest of the way," said Winthrop co-head coach Mark Cooke. "You give up that many runs like that to good teams early it makes it tough to come back. I'm excited the way the girls battled, they never gave up. Delaware just snatched the win from our grasp."

Trailing 2-0 after the first to UNCG, Winthrop put three across in the top of the second to grab the lead. With the bases loaded Jill Derrick was hit by a pitch to score the first run and then Shayna Covington's grounder to second scored Blake Wallert as Madison Templeton also came around to score after a throwing error on the play.

UNCG took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the second as Rebecca Kale provided a one-out RBI double. After a single by Tory Wright, she tried to steal second and when the throw was made Kale ran home for the 4-3 lead.

The Eagles had a runner in scoring position in the sixth inning when Ashley Westbrooks singled with two outs and then stole second but Wallert grounded out to the pitcher to end the threat.

Kiley Majette took the loss as she falls to 4-7 after allowing four runs on four hits with a walk and strikeout in two innings. Freshman Sabrina Shroades turned in one of the best outings of her career as tossed four innings of relief allowing no hits or runs with two walks and two strikeouts.

In the first game of the day the Blue Hens scored five runs in the top of the seventh to hand the Eagles their third straight loss.

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks to a two-run home run by Leah Young. The was increased to 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth as Young drove home another run on a bunt single as Brooke Ellison raced home from third. Morgan Lowers followed Young with an RBI single through the hole at third.

The seventh started with an eight-pitch walk and then a single to short by Leanna Gearhart. A Giovanna Kolofer single to left loaded the bases and brought on a pitching change as Freshman Madyson Watson replaced Keleigh Romine. Watson walked the first batter she faced and then on a 2-0 count Anna Steinmetz hit a grand slam to left center for a 5-4 lead.

Romine tossed six innings allowing three runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts but didn't factor in the decision.

Antone finished the game with a career-high four hits as she extended her hitting streak to five games and streak of reaching base to six games. Young had two hits and for the second time this season had three RBI.
