CHAPEL HILL, NC – The Winthrop baseball team suffered its first shutout of the young season as the Eagles fell to #7 North Carolina, 11-0, on Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium.
The Eagles will return to action this weekend as they compete in the four-team Tidelands Health Classic, hosted by defending College World Series Champions Coastal Carolina. The
Eagles will face Albany at 5 p.m. on Friday, followed with two games on Saturday, first at 10 a.m. against San Francisco and at 1:30 p.m. against the host Chanticleers. Winthrop will face Albany again at 12 noon on Sunday at Pelicans Park near Broadway at The Beach.
Winthrop (4-3) could only muster four singles against North Carolina (8-0). Sophomore second baseman
Brandon Fite went 2 for 4,
Babe Thomas was 1 for 3, and
Tyler Halstead had a pinch-hit single.
Junior left-handed starter
Riley Arnone had four strong shutout and allowed three of North Carolina's 12 hits. Freshman
Dalton Whitaker (1-1) took the loss for the Eagles as he allowed three runs in just one-third of an inning. UNC freshman Tyler Baum pitched 5.2 innings, allowed two hits and struck out six to earn his first college win.
The Tar Heels scored five runs in the fifth inning they strung together four straight hits, including three doubles. UNC added another run in the sixth on a solo home run by Logan Warmoth. UNC added insurance with four runs in the seventh and one more run in the eighth.
