CLINTON, SC—An issue that has hurt Winthrop the entire season reared again Monday night as Presbyterian College overcame a six-point halftime deficit to defeat the Eagles 64-50 on the Blue Hose's Senior Night at the Templeton Center.
Winthrop held a 30-24 lead at intermission thanks to a combined 25 points by
Erica Williams and
Danyael Goodhope, but the Eagles managed only five points in the third quarter as they made just 1 of 10 shots and committed 11 turnovers. PC took advantage of Winthrop's inability to score and take care of the ball to take a 43-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The loss dropped Winthrop's record to 2-27 overall and 1-16 in Big South action. With the setback, the Eagles set a school record for most losses in a season. PC improves to 11-17 (9-8 BSC).
Williams finished the game with 18 while Goodhope scored 11 as she returned to action after missing the last six games. PC was led by Cortney Storey with a game-high 19.
Winthrop jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two quick baskets by Williams and the Eagles first five shots before Cortney Storey made a layup, free throw and a 17 footer. Allie Wagner tied the game at 8-8 on a layup and then Janie Miles converted two free throws to finish a 9-0 run and give the Blue Hose a brief 10-8 lead. The Eagles responded with two free throws by Williams to end the first quarter in a 10-10 tie.
PC, which connected on 15 three-pointers in its 78-39 win over Winthrop on Jan. 21, finally made its first shot from behind the arc when Rebecca drilled a trey to put the Blue Hose up 15-13. Williams responded a minute later with her own 3-pointer as the teams traded the lead four times before Williams scored on back-to-back drives to the basket to give the Eagles a 25-21 lead. Walker cut the lead to a point when she knocked down another three with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter. Williams then made a reverse layup and a free throw to put the Eagles up 28-24 and Goodhope gave Winthrop a six-point lead at intermission by driving the length of the floor with a layup.
Winthrop will close out the regular season on Saturday at home when it hosts Charleston Southern at 4 p.m. It will be Senior Day as Williams and
CiiCii Buford will make their final appearances at the Winthrop Coliseum.
