Softballl Defeats NCCU, Youngstown State Saturday Afternoon At Winthrop/adidas Tourney

Eagles Have Won 8-of-9 Games

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop softball captured wins over North Carolina Central and Youngstown State, Saturday at the Winthrop/adidas Tournament.

Winthrop started the day with a 9-1 victory over NCCU and then ended the day with a 7-1 win over Youngstown State to improve to 9-5 on the year. The tournament ends Sunday, but the Eagles are not in action as their next contest will be Tuesday, Feb. 28 at South Carolina with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.

In the nightcap, the Eagles bounced on Penguins 2-0 in the first and led 5-0 after three innings. Leah Young put the Eagles up in the first with a two-run home run to center. Then in the third inning Paige Haley delivered a two-run single.

Sophomore Kiley Majette tossed a complete game allowing one unearned run on eight hits with two walks and seven strikeouts to even her record at 4-4 on the year.

In the win over NCCU, Winthrop trailed 1-0 heading to the bottom of the third when the offense exploded for seven runs. Maddie Antone tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI double to left and then Morgan Lowers cleared the bases with a double to left center. Three batters later the bases were loaded again and Madison Templeton delivered a shot over the fence in left for a grand slam. However, Templeton passed Tara Loken on the bases and was called out, taking the home run away but she still got credit for her career-best three RBI

Freshman Madyson Watson turned in a strong outing with a five inning complete game allowing one run on four hits with no walks and a career-high eight strikeouts as she's now 2-0 on the year.

Lowers finished with a career-high four RBI in the win over NCCU. Haley extended her hitting streak to six games and has reached base in eight straight. Antone has reached base in 10 straight games. Haley and Brooke Ellison led the team with three hits in the two games.
