COLUMBIA, SC—Winthrop dropped a double-header at South Carolina 8-0 and 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at Bekham Field.
The Eagles fall to 9-7 on the year and looked to bounce back as they return home for the Winthrop Invitational Tournament this weekend. South Carolina improves to 14-2 with the wins.
"We weren't ready to play that first game," said Winthrop co-head coach
Mark Cooke. "After that we went and gave them a heck of a ball game with a much better effort. I like how the team battled back after the first game. Keleigh (Romine) threw a great ball game. We played a lot better defense, smarter in the second ball game."
The Eagles bounced back from the five inning loss in game one to battle the Gamecocks to the final inning of game two. The Eagles stranded a runner in each of the first three innings, but couldn't get a run across. The best chance came in the fifth inning as
Brooke Ellison doubled to right, but a fly out to right field by
Paige Haley ended the inning.
The Gamecocks got a leadoff single by Victoria Williams, who was then sacrificed to second. Romine got the next batter on a ground out to short before Shannon Plese delivered a walk-off double to center on a 3-1 pitch.
Romine tossed 6.2 innings allowing one run on four hits with two walks and a strikeout in a complete game effort in the second game of the day. South Carolina's starter Cayla Drotar tossed five innings allowing two hits with three walks and two strikeouts and Nickie Blue tossed the final two innings not allowing a run or any hits.
Sophomore
Kiley Majette took the loss in the circle in game one after allowing four runs on four hits in 0.2 innings. Freshman
Sabrina Shroades replaced her and tossed 3.2 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
