ROCK HILL, SC— Coming off an impressive weekend at the Cougar Classic, the Winthrop softball team takes a five-game winning streak into the Winthrop/adidas Tournament this weekend. The Eagles will open up on Friday, Feb. 24 against East Tennessee State at 1 p.m. and Bucknell at 3 p.m.
WINTHROP/ADIDAS TOURNAMENT
Winthrop will host the Winthrop/adidas Tournament for the 3
rd straight year as the field will feature Bucknell, East Tennessee State, North Carolina Central, Youngstown State, and Moutn St. Mary's and Eastern Kentucky. In addition to its games on Friday, the Eagles will face North Carolina Central and Youngstown State on Saturday.
LOOK BACK AT THE COUGAR CLASSIC
The Eagles were an impressive 5-0 against a solid field at the Cougar Classic last weekend hosted by the College of Charleston at Patriots Point. The Eagles used timely hitting and strong pitching to build its current five-game winning streak. The team batted .261 while the pitching held opponents to a .195 average. Junior
Maddie Antone led the way offensively going 7-for-14 with two runs, three doubles, a triple and a homer as she also recorded a team-high 8 RBI.
Paige Haley tied Antone with the most hits in the five games with seven as she scored five times. The Eagles had wins over Eastern Kentucky, Illinois-Chicago, Monmouth, Lipscomb and the host College of Charleston.
TWO EAGLES EARN BIG SOUTH WEEKLY HONORS

Kiley Majette and freshman
Ashley Westbrooks earned Big South weekly honors for their performances at the Cougar Classic last weekend. Majette was named the Pitcher of the Week after going 3-0 with her first career save and posting a 1.71 ERA. Westbrooks was named the Freshman of the Week as she batted .462 with a run and four RBI and extended her hitting streak to nine games before going 0-for-1 in the final game of the tournament against the Cougars.
BRING'EM ON HOME
Junior
Maddie Antone has been impressive in her return this season after missing the 2016 season. So far through 10 games this year she's driven in a team-high 14 runs and is batting .387 with three doubles, a triple and two home runs. She reached her 100
th career hit against the College of Charleston on Sunday and is second in the league in RBI.
HOT STARTS
Haley is off to a great start at the plate as she leads the team with a .394 average and nine runs. She's already got seven RBI, which is five shy of her career-best for RBI in a single-season (12, which she did twice). Westbrooks had a base hit in the first nine games of her career and has reached base in all 10 as she's second on the team with a .393 average and has four runs and six RBI. Sophomore
Brooke Ellison had 11 hits in 23 starts (35 games) last season and has almost reached that mark through the first two weeks of the season. She's started eight games and is batting .368 (7 hits) and two RBI.
SERIES HISTORY/SCOUTING (EAST TENNESSEE STATE)
Eagles and Buccaneers meet for the 13
th time as Winthrop leads the all-time series 10-2. This will be the first time these two teams have faced each other since 2007 in Johnson City, TN as the Eagles swept a doubleheader, 9-2 and 6-2. The Bucs enter the weekend with a 4-6 record and is 1-3 against teams from the Big South. Tiffany Laughren is batting a team-high .517 with seven runs, four doubles and four RBI. Madison Ogle has three starts and has tossed the most innings (21.0) as she has a team-best 3.00 ERA and a 1-3 record.
SERIES HISTORY/SCOUTING (BUCKNELL)
The Bison are 4-1 on the year after picking up two wins over Hampton and two against Gardner-Webb last weekend in Boiling Springs. Winthrop and Bucknell have met just once with that game taking place in 1998 at the Winthrop Invitational and the Eagles prevailing 5-2. Paulina Gutkin has a team-best .600 average with two runs, a double, triple and five RBI. Lara Bean leads the pitching staff with a 3-0 record and 1.43 ERA.
SERIES HISTORY/SCOUTING (NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL)
NCCU and Winthrop have never met. NCCU is 1-5 on the season and is in Boiling Springs, NC Thursday afternoon for a doubleheader at Gardner-Webb. Miriam Duen leads the team with a .385 average while Ryann Kostandin, Kim Mobley and Ava Dolan each have a team-best two RBI. Dominique Wilson is the top pitcher with a 1-3 record and 2.45 ERA with 15 strikeouts to seven walks in 20 innings of work.
SERIES HISTORY/SCOUTING (YOUNGSTOWN STATE)
The Penguins opened the season last weekend in Conway, SC at the Kickin' Chicken Classic at Coastal Carolina. Youngstown State enters the weekend 0-5. Alexis Roach has a team-best .429 average while Sara Dowd leads the team with five RBI. Caitlyn Minney has the most appearances (4) and tied for the most starts (2) as she's 0-2 with a 3.89 ERA.
BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
Winthrop is picked to finish seventh in the Big South Conference preseason poll, but has expectations of being toward the top of the league. With the addition of Antone and the consistency of
Paige Haley through her career at the plate along with the emergence of
Leah Young,
Morgan Lowers and
Blake Wallert the Eagles expect to have a lot more firepower up and down the lineup than the last few year
