MACON, GA – Coming off a weeklong break, the Winthrop women's basketball team fell 93-45 on the road to the Mercer Bears Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop (1-9) jumped out to a 5-3 lead early in the contest before Mercer (9-2) went on a 12-0 run to take a 15-5 lead. The Bears led 21-12 after the opening 10 minutes. Mercer slowly increased its lead in the second quarter and led 46-23 at the break.
In the first five minutes of the second half, Mercer went on a 16-0 run to open a 39-point lead over the Eagles. The two sides were even in points over the final five minutes of the quarter and the Bears led 72-33 going into the fourth quarter. Mercer rattled off another 10-0 run in the fourth quarter and took the 93-45 victory.

Emily Kelley was the only Eagle in double figures Sunday, finishing with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from three-point range. Anika Riley led the team with seven rebounds.
Winthrop shot 37 percent from the field including 42 percent from beyond the three-point arc but struggled at the free-throw line, converting on five of 13 attempts. Mercer put up 77 shots on the afternoon, hitting on 54 percent of its attempts from the field.

Winthrop will close out its slate of games in 2017 with a road contest against Tennessee Tech on Tuesday. The contest is set for a 12 p.m. tip.
