Brown's Career-High 21 Point Leads Eagles In Loss To Duquesne Sunday Afternoon

ROCK HILL, SC— Freshman Kayla Brown scored a career-high 21 points to lead Winthrop women's basketball in its 81-54 home-opening loss to Duquesne, Sunday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dukes scored the first seven points of the game and led 10-4 with 5:56 to play in the first quarter. Duquesne was able to extend its lead to double-figures at the 3:57 mark after a Eniko jumper in the lane for a 17-6 lead. The lead reached 16 points before Kayla Atkins cut it to 25-11 to end the first with a jumper. Both team struggled from the field in the second quarter, combining to go 5-for-24 from the floor, as the Eagles trailed 36-16 at the break.

Winthrop came out of the half on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 12 points. The run was capped off by back-to-back threes from Emily Kelley and Brown. Duquesne answered the run with a three from Julijana Vojinovic. Winthrop scored 21 points in the third behind 47 percent shooting but the Dukes matched them shooting 50 percent and scoring 23 points.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Brown led the Eagles in scoring with 21 points as she was 6-for-18 from the field and 7-for-8 from the line. Ronata Rogers had a solid game in the post with eight points (2-for-3) and nine rebounds. Marissa Cantrell scored eight points off the bench as she also had two steals. Winthrop finished the game shooting just 35 percent while the Dukes shot 48 percent. The Dukes finished 22-for-24 at the foul line while the Eagles were 14-for-20. Duquesne took advantage of 22 turnovers, turning them into 21 points.

The Eagles will continue their homestand as they take on North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
