Eagles Earn Big 94-50 Victory Over NC Wesleyan Wednesday Evening

ROCK HILL, SC -- The Winthrop women's basketball team picked up a big 94-50 victory over the North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops Wednesday evening to earn their first win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

North Carolina Wesleyan (0-1) grabbed the first four points of the contest before the Eagles went on a 23-2 run in just over six minutes to take a 23-6 lead with 2:04 remaining in the quarter.  Winthrop held a 30-10 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

Winthrop (1-2) limited the Battling Bishops to only six points on 14 percent shooting from the field in the second quarter while the Eagles scored 26 of their own.  Angela Coello Perez scored six points in only three minutes of action in the second stanza.

The Eagles continued to increase their lead through the third quarter, outscoring NC Wesleyan 23-16.  The Bishops were able to outscore Winthrop 18-15 in the final quarter but the game was well out of reach by that point.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Six Eagles scored in double figures Wednesday evening.  Ronata Rogers finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 boards.  Marissa Cantrell added 16 points while Angela Coello Perez scored 13.  Kayla Atkins led the Eagles in rebounds with 11.

Winthrop had a strong shooting night, finishing 45 percent from the floor including 51 percent in the first half.  The Eagles limited the Bishops to only 27 percent from the field and 12 percent from three-point range.  Winthrop dominated down low, outscoring NC Wesleyan 42-16 in the paint.

WHAT'S UP NEXT
Winthrop closes out its three-game homestand on Saturday at 1 p.m. against South Carolina State.  The game will be part of a Homecoming doubleheader with the men who will take on Central Penn at 4 p.m.
