ELON, NC -- The Winthrop women's basketball team opened its season Friday evening on the road at Elon and fell 98-37 to the Phoenix.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Elon (1-0) opened the contest on a 7-0 run before Emily Kelley connected on a three-pointer to stop the run. The Phoenix limited the Eagles to only six points in the first quarter and led 24-6 after the opening 10 minutes.
Winthrop (0-1) wasn't able to get much going offensively in the second quarter as Elon extended its lead to 37-10 prior to the media timeout. The Phoenix took a 45-16 lead into the break.
Both squads got their best scoring output in the third quarter. Winthrop put 12 points up on the board but was outdone by Elon's 31. Elon led 76-28 entering the final quarter and went on for the 98-37 victory.

Freshman Anika Riley led the Eagles with 11 points and also grabbed three rebounds. Fellow freshman Kayla Brown contributed nine points while Kelley finished with eight.
Elon finished the game shooting 54 percent from the field and 20 percent from three-point range. The Eagles shot 24 percent from the field and 29 percent from beyond the arc. Elon dominated on the boards, winning the rebounding battle 62-19 including 22 offensive boards which led to 30 second-chance points.

Winthrop will have little time to prepare for its next opponent, as the Eagles welcome Duquesne to the Winthrop Coliseum on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the team's home opener.
