Phoebe Wu had 26 kills that propel the Winthrop volleyball team to a 3-2 victory over Liberty on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
Winthrop and Liberty went back-and-forth until Winthrop started pulling away at 15-12. The Flames came back and tied it up at 15-15. The Eagles pulled away to make it 20-16 and eventually won the match 25-23. Wu had seven kills in the first set with a .400 hitting percentage. Yamaguchi had 11 assists.
Set 2
Liberty started on a 14-6 run that forced Winthrop to call a timeout. The Flames then went on a 8-4 run to make it 22-10. Winthrop kept fighting but fell 25-15 in the set. The Flames out killed Winthrop 12-7. Wu led the Eagles with four kills while senior
Keaupono Fey has five kills in the match.
Set 3
Both teams kept it close in the third set as Winthrop could only be up by one point. Winthrop went on a 3-0 run to make it 18-15 with an attack error by Amaya Williams. Winthrop made it 24-21 until Liberty went on a 3-0 run to make it 24-24. After fighting their way back the Flames went on to win 27-25 because of an attack error by Fey and a ball handling error by Yamaguchi. After three sets Wu has 16 kills while Yamaguchi has 34 assists.
Set 4
The Eagles started on a 4-0 run until Liberty came back to tie it at 6-6. For the rest of the set both teams kept it close and nobody took a big lead. Winthrop finished on a 5-1 run to win 25-21. After four sets Winthrop leads 56-52 in kills but Liberty has 10 blocks on the match while Winthrop only has four.
Set 5
Either team wanted to lose as they were tied at 11-11. Winthrop won the next two points with a kill by Yamaguchi and an attack error by Anna Gragg. Liberty won the next point before the Eagles won the last two points to win 15-12. Wu had four kills in the match while Liberty had five attack errors.
