ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team fell in straight sets Friday evening to the Campbell Camels in Big South Conference play.
The loss drops the Eagles to 0-2 in the Big South and 8-9 overall while Campbell improved to 7-10 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Campbell dominated the opening set. After the two sides were tied at 2-2, the Camels went on a 6-0 run, opening an 8-2 lead and didn't look back, taking the first set 25-15.
In the second set, Winthrop held an early lead but the two sides were all square after 20 points. Campbell then went on a 3-0 run and kept the Eagles from getting a run of their won. The Camels were able to fight off a late charge to win the second set 25-20.
In a back-and-forth third set, both sides made runs, resulting in seven lead changes in the set. With the score tied at 14-14, Campbell went on a 7-0 run, allowing Winthrop only one more point, taking the final set 25-15.
Keaupono Fey led the Eagles with 10 kills while Sydney Gunter added nine in the loss. Siani Yamaguchi finished with a double-double with 23 assists and 10 digs to lead the team.
Winthrop will return to the court on Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest against the High Point Panthers.
