ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team remained winless in the Big South Saturday as the Eagles fell in three sets to High Point at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Winthrop's conference record stands at 0-3 and the Eagles fell to 8-10 on the season. High Point improved to 3-1 in the Big South and 11-6 overall.
In the first set, High Point used a 6-0 run to turn an early 4-3 lead into a 10-3 lead and Winthrop was unable to recover from the deficit. The Panthers took the first set 25-15.
The two sides remained close in the early going of the second set as the Eagles trailed only 9-7. The Panthers, however, started to go on mini runs while the Eagles couldn't amass more than one point in a row. High Point took the second set 25-14.
Winthrop's offensive efficiency picked up in the third set and the two teams went back and forth through the first 30 points with a tie game at 15-15. High Point was able to briefly slip away to grab a 20-16 lead but Winthrop fought back to take a 24-22 lead. The Eagles couldn't maintain the momentum as two kills from High Point and two attack errors from Winthrop gave the Panthers the 26-24 victory.
Emma Weakland led the Eagles with 10 kills and a .421 attack percentage. Siani Yamaguchi finished with a team-high 16 assists and seven digs.
Winthrop will hit the road for its next conference weekend as the Eagles will face Radford and Liberty next Friday and Saturday respectively.
