ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop men's soccer gets back to Big South Conference action as it travels to Clinton, SC to take on Presbyterian College on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
The Eagles are coming off a 2-0 home loss to 13
th-ranked Charlotte and are now 3-5-1 on the year and 0-1 in the Big South. PC is has won two straight with both victories coming in overtime as it is 3-6 on the year and 1-0 in the league.
This will be the 18
th meeting between the Eagles and Blue Hose as the Eagles are 17-0 all-time in the series and 8-0 in league matchups.
Last Saturday the Eagles opened league action with a 4-3 loss at home to Liberty and then stepped away from conference action to take on the 49ers on Tuesday. The three goals were a season-high for the Eagles, who also allowed a season-high four goals.
Senior
James Skonicki, who had returned from injury, came off the bench to score two second half goals against the Flames to get the Eagles within a goal at 3-2 but Liberty answered right back. The Eagles continued to battle from its 3-0 deficit and made it a 4-3 game in the 72
nd minute on a goal by
Rasmus Arousell.
Arousell continues to lead the team offensively as he had a goal and an assist and has a team-high eight points with three goals and two assists on the year. Skonicki is now second on the team with six points.
Junior
Kenneth Perkinson is coming off a three save game against Charlotte. He allowed two goals, but the second came off a deflected off a cross. He's started the last five games in goal and seven of the team's nine games.
PC in the midst of opening league play against the top three teams from the Big South Conference preseason poll. The Blue Hose opened conference play with a 2-1 double-overtime victory over High Point, which was voted to finish second on the league. The Blue Hose now face Winthrop, which was picked third in the league and after a non-conference game against Appalachian State, will face the preseason favorite Highlanders.
During the two-game win streak not only did the Blue Hose knock off High Point, but also earned a 1-0 win over a Mercer in overtime. Mason Lewis leads the team in scoring with 10 points (4g, 2a). Lewis has two game-winning goals, including the golden goal against Mercer. Cade Crow, second on the team in scoring with two goals and an assist, netted the golden goal in the win over High Point.
There have been two goalies used this season by the Blue Hose with Conner Behrend seeing the most action with seven starts, including a shutout against Mercer. Christian Evans has just two starts on the year, but was in goal in the win over High Point.
