ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop men's soccer suffered a 2-0 loss to 13th-ranked Charlotte, Tuesday evening in non-conference action.

Winthrop falls to 3-5-1 on the year while the 49ers are now 6-1. The Eagles get back to Big South action this weekend when they travel to Clinton, SC for a 7 p.m. contest against Presbyterian College.

"Our guys executed the game plan for 90 minutes," said Winthrop head coach Daniel Ridenhour. "We certainly put ourselves in a position to find a result with our work rate defensively and determination. Charlotte is a Top 20 team and showed their quality with their first goal. We were unlucky on the second goal with a deflection. I'm very proud of our team to play the full game with desire and commitment. We have to prepare now for a determined Presbyterian team and work to find a result on the road."

An early goal by Harrison Steadman put Charlotte on the board in the 8th minute. Zhuvonte Wilson served a ball into the box and freed himself up in the box to head the ball into the right side of the frame.

The Eagles trailed 1-0 at the half and applied a lot of pressure in the early going of the second half was the Charlotte defense stood tall during a quick three-shot barrage inside the 18-yard box. In the 58th minute Charlotte was on the attack with Matej Dekovic down the wing and as he served the ball into the box it deflected off the foot of a Winthrop defender changing its path as it squeaked into the goal at the near post as Kenneth Perkinson attempted to keep it out.

The 49ers finished with a 17-8 advantage in shots as Perkinson finished the game with three saves and Charlotte's Elliot Panicco made one save to preserve the shutout.
