Men's Soccer Suffers 3-1 Road Loss At PC Saturday Night

CLINTON, SC— Winthrop men's soccer suffered its third straight loss after falling 3-1 at Presbyterian College, Saturday night in Big South Conference action.

The loss drops the Eagles to 3-6-1 on the year and 0-2 in the Big South while PC improves to 4-6 on the year and a perfect 2-0 in the league. Winthrop looks to rebound on Tuesday, Oct. 4 when it travels to Buies Creek, NC to take on Campbell at 7 p.m.

Mason Lewis scored the game-winner in the 79th minute when he was set free into space as he dribbled toward Winthrop goalkeeper Kenneth Perkinson and placed as shot into the net for his second of the match and sixth of the season. Lewis was set up for the goal on a through ball by Cade Crow that split the Winthrop defense.

Lewis gave the Blue Hose the first lead of the game in the 31st minute when he won a loose ball in the box, turned back toward goal and fired a shot from just inside the 18 that split Winthrop defenders and found its way into the lower left corner of the goal.

In the 39th minute the Eagles earned a second corner within a minute and made the second one count as Francesco Tiozzo headed home a corner kick by Nil Vinyals. Tiozzo made a run just inside the spot and his header went into the left side of the frame for his second goal of the year.

As Winthrop pushed numbers forward in search of a game-tying goal, PC won the ball and countered as John Speed dribbled the ball down the field and made his way into the box. Speed cut back toward the middle of the field and curled a shot past a defender and a diving Perkinson.
