BUIES CREEK, NC— Winthrop men's soccer suffered its third straight setback as it fell 4-1 at Campbell, Tuesday evening in Big South Conference action.
The Eagles are now 3-7-1 on the year and 0-3 in the Big South. The Camels improve to 4-5 on the year and a 1-2 league mark. Winthrop returns home to try and end its losing streak when it hosts High Point on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
"Credit to Campbell for punishing us for our mistakes in the first half," said Winthrop head coach
Daniel Ridenhour. "I think it was another game where we showed our immaturity. I was happy with our second half performance but our final ball into the box wasn't quality."
The Eagles grabbed an early lead when
Rasmus Arousell took a
Marco Gatzke pass and fired a shot from 25 yards out into the net just 4:59 in.
Campbell answered just shy of seven minutes later to tie the match when Gabe Parrish scored on his first touch off a pass from Samuel Orisatoki. In the 19th minute the Camels pulled in front 2-1 after Daniel Mukuna scored his second of the season off a corner kick. The third goal of the first half came in the 29th minute when Seth Jones was set free behind the Winthrop defense on a pass from Pepe Rangel and he finished a one-on-one for his second of the year. Rangel made it 4-1 before halftime as he converted a penalty kick in the 40th minute.
Winthrop had 11 shots and four corners in the second half alone, but was never able to break through to get back into the game. The Eagles finished with a 15-9 advantage in shots while the Camels had six corners to Winthrop's four.
