ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop men's soccer team will host fifth-ranked Charlotte, Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. on Eagle Field.
Winthrop enters the contest at 3-4-1 overall while the 49ers come in with a 5-1 mark.
It's Discoveries Soccer Club Night and any member of Discoveries Soccer Club wearing their jersey will receive free admission. Members of other area club teams wearing their jersey will also be admitted free.
The Eagles are coming off a 4-3 loss to Liberty in their Big South Conference opener on Saturday. While the Eagles found the net a season-high three times, they yielded a season-high four goals and were forced to try and rally from a three-goal deficit.
Senior
James Skonicki, who left the game at UNC Wilmington on Sept. 11 after 20 minutes, returned to action as he came off the bench to score two second half goals. His second goal pulled the Eagles to within one at 3-2. He is now second on the team in goals (3) and points (6) on the season. Leading Winthrop in scoring is junior
Rasmus Arousell with three goals and two assists (eight points). Arousell had a goal and an assist against the Flames. Freshman
Jogvan Jacobsen is leading the team with three assists.
Charlotte is coming off a 2-1 overtime win against Florida International as Brandt Bronico netted the golden-goal on a penalty in the 92
nd minute. It was his first goal of the season as he's one of eight goal scorers this season for Charlotte. The offense ranks second in the country in goals per game at 2.67 and is led by Marco Sunol-Rojas with nine points (3 goals, 3 assists) and Harrison Steadman leads the team in goals with four.
Defensively the 49ers are holding opponents to just .50 goals per game and have recorded four shutouts. Redshirt freshman Elliot Panicco has played every second in net as he ranks 12
th nationally in goals against average (0.50).
This will be the 21
st meeting between Winthrop and Charlotte as the 49ers lead the all-time series 13-3-3. The two teams met in Charlotte last season with the 49ers rallying from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Eagles 3-2. Bronico and Steadman each had goals against the Eagles that meeting.
