ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team swept past the Western Carolina Catamounts in three sets Tuesday evening in non-conference action.
With the victory the Eagles' record improved to 6-5 on the season and 2-0 at home while the Catamounts fell to 5-7 on the year.
Western Carolina controlled most of the early going of the opening set and led by as much as four at 15-11. The Eagles battled back in a big way, going on a 10-1 run to take a 21-16 lead and easily going on for the 25-19 first-set victory.
In the second set, the two sides were even through the first 14 points before Winthrop rattled off seven points in a row, taking a 14-7 lead. The Catamounts were able to pull a few points back and get within three at 23-20, but no closer as the Eagles took the second set 25-20.
The two teams went back and forth in the third set. Winthrop led early by as much as five at 10-5 but Western Carolina battled back to eventually take a 20-17 advantage. Following an Eagle timeout, Winthrop went on an 8-1 run to win the set 25-21.
Sydney Gunter led the Eagles with 11 kills while Keaupono Fey tallied nine and Kelsey Schroll added eight. Siani Yamaguchi led the team with 16 assists and Carlie Skelton had a team-high 13 digs.
The Eagles will close out their early-season tournaments this weekend as they head to West Virginia and will face Dartmouth, Akron and the host Mountaineers.
