Rock Hill, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team scored three unanswered goals to earn a 3-2 win over Marist College, Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field.
The Eagles, now 3-4 on the year, are back in action on Sunday, Sept. 18 when they travel to Kennesaw State for a 1 p.m. contest. With the loss, Marist College is now 2-4.
Marist College scored first in the 11th minute as Juliete Loccisano shot it from 30 yards out that found the upper right corner of the goal.
Winthrop answered back in the 34th minute when Greta Conboy scored off a loose ball after the Marist goalkeeper Makala Foley fumbled the ball forward. Winthrop added another goal in the 38th minute as Lauren Watts scored off the goalkeepers save. Winthrop was awarded a penalty kick which Watts took but it was saved by Foley initially but the save bounced off the post and back out to Watts who then buried a shot into the open goal.
In the 51st minute Watts gave Winthrop a two-goal lead as she ripped a free kick at the top of the box into the upper left part of the frame.
The Red Foxes got within a goal in the 81st minute when Alexa Svensson's corner kick was redirected into the goal by Camille Bowen from inside the six-yard box.
Winthrop's goalkeepers Caroline Duncan and Karly Gustafson combined for nine saves while Foley finished with two saves for Marist College.
