WILMINGTON, NC—The Winthrop men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss at UNC Wilmington, Sunday afternoon in the final game of the UNCW SpringHill Suites Classic.
The loss is the second straight for the Eagles as they fall to 3-3 on the year while UNCW remains unbeaten at 4-0. Winthrop will be off for the next eight days until it returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at Appalachian State.
The Seahawks grabbed the lead in the 21
st minute on a goal by Julio Moncada, who collected a ball that came off the head of a Winthrop player and proceeded to blast a shot from 20 yards out into the back of the net. UNCW put a lot of pressure on the Eagles in the second half and found an insurance goal in the 80
th minute on a goal by Stian Sandbekkhaug. The goal came off a defensive mistake by the Eagles as Daniel lakovlesvski won the ball and quickly set up Sandbekkhaug with a one-on-one with Winthrop's
Kenneth Perkinson and he placed the ball into the net for the two-goal advantage.
"Another difficult game for us today against an extremely good UNCW team," said Winthrop head coach
Daniel Ridenhour. "We gave an unfortunate goal away in the first half and struggled in the final third. The last 15 minutes we changed our shape and were unlucky to give away the second goal as we were pushing numbers. Hats off to UNCW for taking their chances. I would also like to thank coach Aidan Heaney for their hospitality and hosting the event. For us, we have nine days before the next away game and this will give us some time to recover and prep for App State."
Perkinson finished with four saves on the afternoon while UNCW's Ryan Cretens made one save to earn the shutout.
Nil Vinyals led the way offensively for the Eagles with two shots.
