BOONE, NC— Winthrop men's soccer came out of its nine-day break and earned a 1-1 draw on the road at Appalachian State, Tuesday evening in non-conference men's soccer action.
It was the final prep game for the Eagles (3-3-1), who will open Big South Conference action on Saturday, Sept. 24 at home against Liberty at 7 p.m. It will be the end of a full day of soccer at Eagle Field that includes the women's soccer game at 1 p.m. against Radford and then the "Guns-N-Hoses" charity match at 4 p.m. between the Rock Hill Fire and Police Departments.
"It was a very good result for us today," said Winthrop head coach
Daniel Ridenhour. "App State is a difficult place to play and credit to them for pushing the tempo of the game. We found it difficult to play against their pressure. Some guys stepped up and had positive games after our nine-day break. Happy to see Alvin step up and deliver a quality cross for the goal.
Kenneth Perkinson was big today in goal and the two center backs played solid all night long."
Winthrop fell behind 1-0 late in the first half, but tied the match in the 78th minute on a goal by
Marco Gatzke. The senior midfielder headed home a cross from
Alvin Fonkoua for his first of the season.
The Mountaineers (1-5-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute when they were awarded a penalty kick and Stephen Chapman stepped up and converted for his second goal of the year.
Perkinson finished the game with eight saves while Appalachian State's Jake Agnew finished with three saves.
The closest either team came to winning the game was a shot off the crossbar by Appalachian State's Raheem Somersall in the 108th minute.
