Volleyball Hits Road for Carolina Classic Saturday & Sunday, Hosts Home Opener Monday

**SCHEDULE CHANGE**  Due to the expected impact of Hurricane Hermine, all Friday games in the Carolina Classic have been postponed to Sunday.  Saturday games will go on as scheduled.  Winthrop will not meet Furman at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

ROCK HILL, SC
– The Winthrop volleyball team will have a busy Labor Day weekend as it heads to the Carolina Classic for matches Saturday and Sunday before hosting its home opener on Monday.

At the Carolina Classic, hosted by South Carolina, the Eagles will meet Furman on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. after taking on Clemson and the host Gamecocks on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. respectively.  Winthrop will then return home and host Georgia Southern Monday at 6 p.m.

Winthrop enters the long weekend with a 1-2 record from the UNC Wilmington Tournament.  The Eagles picked up their lone victory over Davidson on Saturday.

Sophomore Lourdes Rosario had a strong weekend which earned her a spot on the All-Tournament Team.  Rosario tallied 46 kills over three matches to lead the Eagles.  Freshman Sydney Gunter also had a positive first weekend, totaling 21 kills.  Freshman Siani Yamaguchi emerged as the team's primary setter, totaling 90 assists over the three matches.

Furman enters the weekend with a 1-2 record, falling to the University of the Pacific and Georgia Tech while defeating Auburn last weekend.  In the Big Orange Bash last weekend, Clemson recorded two wins and one loss, defeating High Point and Wofford while falling in five sets to William & Mary.  South Carolina comes in as the only undefeated team for this weekend's tournament as the Gamecocks picked up three victories at the College of Charleston Tournament last weekend.

The Georgia Southern Eagles will visit the Winthrop Coliseum on Monday and will host their own tournament this weekend.  Georgia Southern enters the weekend winless after a tough opening-weekend schedule at the Penn State Classic, being swept by North Carolina, West Virginia and the Nittany Lions.

Following the long weekend, the Eagles will hit the court again next weekend as they head north to Maryland to participate in the UMBC Tournament.  Winthrop will meet Robert Morris, Morgan State and the host Retrievers in the tournament.
