JACKSONVILLE, FL— The Winthrop men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss at North Florida in its season opener, Friday evening at the Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament.
The Eagles will look to bounce back as they'll finish the weekend with a 5 p.m. contest at Jacksonville on Sunday, Aug. 28.
"Credit to an experienced UNF team," said Winthrop head coach
Daniel Ridenhour. "They are difficult to play against at home. We as a team showed our inexperience and were naive at times with our play which then led to us being undisciplined. We have to learn from these moments and be more positive with our play. Our recovery now is of the utmost importance and we will see what sort of response we have against a good JU team."
The Eagles trailed 1-0 at the half as Milan Kovacs was able to find the back of the net when he let a shot fly around the top of the 18. It remained a 1-0 game until the 65
th minute when UNF was awarded a penalty. Micah Smoak stepped up and converted for a 2-0 lead. The Osprey added another goal in the 84
th minute when Kovacs netted his second when he received a free kick and hit a shot first time.
Winthrop was outshot 20-4 as Eagle goalie
Kenneth Perkinson finished with three saves while the Osprey's Tord Pedersen and Juanes Fajardo combined on the shutout.
