JACKSONVILLE, FL— Junior
Rasmus Arousell scored two goals to lead Winthrop men's soccer to a 2-1 victory at Jacksonville, Sunday evening.
The win gives Winthrop first-year head coach
Daniel Ridenhour his first win as the Eagles are now 1-1 on the year while Jacksonville falls to 0-2. The Eagles will be back in action next weekend at the Big South/SoCON Challenge in Spartanburg, SC as they open up on Friday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m. against Mercer.
The Eagles struck early as Arousell scored on a shot from about 10 yards out from goal in the 10
th minute. Freshman
Jogvan Jacobsen set up Arousell for the goal, the first point for each player in a Winthrop uniform. Arousell made it 2-0 in the 30
th minute when he put himself in a good spot again inside the box and flicked a pass from
Nil Vinyals past the goalkeeper.
"First I would like to thank both JU and UNF for being great host for the Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament," said Ridenhour. "As for the match, I am very pleased with our resolve and bounce back today against a JU team that is very good going forward and creating chances. Our play today was more focused and tempo to start was much better than the other night. We scored two very good goals and found a way to get a result on the road. Really happy for the players and staff to have that first victory. Anytime you go on the road and split games it is a step in the right direction."
In the 72
nd minute, the Dolphins spoiled the Eagles effort for a shutout as Diego Sanchez found the back of the net. It was one of 11 second-half shots by Jacksonville as it applied a lot of pressure late, but Winthrop was able to stay strong enough defensively to hold on for the win. Eagle goalkeeper
Hector Fernandez finished the game with two saves as he earned his fourth career win.
