SPARTANBURG, SC— Winthrop women's soccer made freshman
Keeley Leising's first half goal hold up in a 1-0 victory over USC Upstate Tuesday night at County University Stadium.
The victory evens Winthrop's record at 1-1 as the Eagles prepare for a Friday home game against in-state rival Coastal Carolina that is set to start at 7 p.m. on Eagle Field.
Winthrop improves its record to 3-0 all-time against USC Upstate as the Eagles continue its defensive dominance against the Spartans with their third shutout in the series. The Eagles have now outscored Upstate 8-0 in the three victories.
The Eagles scored in the 35
th minute when Leising placed her shot from the right side of box over the head of goalie Brooke Bailey to the back left corner of the net. She was set up on a nice feed from
Brianna Palmer. The goal was Leising's first on the collegiate level.
Winthrop goalkeeper
Karly Gustafson finished the game with five saves and earned the shut out while Brooke Bailey had five saves for Upstate. The shutout by Gustafson was the fourth of her career.
