ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team lost a close 2-1 battle to its in-state rival Coastal Carolina
on Friday night at Eagle Field when the Chanticleers scored the game-winner with just 16 seconds remaining to play.
With the loss, Winthrop drops to 1-2 on the season and is now 7-8-2 all-time against the Chanticleers.
The Eagles will now prepare for their next game which comes
next Tuesday at home against South Carolina State beginning at
7 p.m. on Eagle Field.
Coastal Carolina started the scoring in the 17
th minute when Daniella Famili scored straight away from the net. The Eagles trailed 1-0 at the half and until the 77
th minute when freshman
Keeley Leising scored off the cross just outside the 6-yard box on an assist from
Samantha Prytulak.
Just when it was looking like overtime, Coastal scored the game-winner with just 16 seconds left as Heston Neal scored from inside the box beating the goalkeeper just inside the post.
Leising has now scored in both of the Eagles last two games.

Karly Gustafson finished the game with six saves while Becca Austin had 4 saves for Coastal.
Winthrop raised nearly $500 during the game for the Lutzie 43 Foundation that honors the late Auburn football player and brother of former Winthrop soccer player Ann Lutzenkirchen.
