ROCK HILL, SC— The Winthrop women's soccer team took an early lead in its season opener against Western Carolina but fell to the Catamounts 3-1
on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field.
Winthrop is now 0-4-1 in its series against WCU, which evened its record at 1-1 with the win. The Eagles will be back in action
Tuesdayevening when they travel to USC Upstate in Spartanburg for a
7 p.m. contest.
Winthrop grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 11th minute as
Jil White scored her first goal as an Eagle. The transfer from ETSU ran onto a free ball in the box and ripped a shot into the back of the net.
WCU tied the match just before the first half ended as Kyla Moncrief made the Eagles pay for a defensive miscue in the 42nd minute. The Catamounts then took the lead in the 71st minute when Eynde Frazier ripped a shot from the top of the box into the upper right corner just out of the reach of Winthrop keeper
Karly Gustafson. WCU added an insurance goal when Emma Haywood scored in the 87th minute that she headed home after taking a cross from Sayres McKenna.
Gustafson finished the game with four saves while her counterpart Carly Tinstman also had four saves.
