ROCK HILL, SC— Thad Harris pitched seven stellar innings and Grant English drove in the game's only run as Winthrop clinched the weekend series against Charleston Southern with a 1-0 victory in Sunday's rubber match at Winthrop Ballpark.
With the win, Winthrop is now 25-21 (10-8 BSC) on the season, while Charleston Southern falls to 16-29 (4-14 BSC).
Winthrop scored the game's only run in the bottom of the second when English singled to right field knocking in Roger Gonzalez, who had doubled earlier in the inning.
Harris started the game for the Eagles and scattered six hits while striking out five in picking up his sixth victory of the season. Zach Cook came on in relief to pitch two scoreless innings to secure his eighth save of the year. Charleston Southern starting pitcher Evan Nations took the loss, going 4.2 innings, yielding seven hits and the game's lone run.
The Eagles travel to Charleston Wednesday, May 11 to take on The Citadel in a non-conference tilt that gets underway at 5 p.m.
