Winthrop Earns Non-Conference Victory With 7-1 Verdict At The Citadel

CHARLESTON, SC— The Winthrop Eagles capitalized on a four-run outburst in the fifth inning to post an impressive 7-1 victory Wednesday night at The Citadel.

With the win, Winthrop is now 25-21 on the season, while the Citadel falls to 16-32.

Winthrop struck first scoring two quick runs in the top of the 1st.  After Mitch Spires reached on a fielding error, Anthony Paulsen singled to center field.  Mark Lowrie then singled through the left side to score Spires and advance Paulsen to second base.  Paulsen was then sent home on a sacrifice fly from Jace Whitley for the 2-0 lead.

In the top of the 3rd, Spires reached base on a fielding error once again and later scored on a Lowrie double to right field.

The Eagles continued to stretch their lead scoring four more runs in the top of the 5th.  Paulsen, Lowrie, and Gonzalez started the rally with three straight singles.   Babe Thomas was then hit by a pitch to advance Paulsen home.  Grant English followed with a single to right field to score Lowrie.  Kyle Edwards was then hit by a pitch to score Gonzalez.  Tyler Asbill hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Thomas for the 7-0 lead.

The Citadel eventually got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th when C. Martin homered to right field cutting the Eagles lead to 7-1.

Lowrie led the Winthrop offensive attack with three hits and two RBIs. Reece Green picked up the win in a starting role, going three innings, yielding just one base hit while striking out five Bulldog batters. Green is now 2-1 on the season.

The Eagles return to Winthrop Ballpark to host their last home series in a matchup against Longwood this weekend, with Game 1 scheduled for Friday, May 13 at 7:00 pm.
