ROCK HILL, SC— The Winthrop Eagles dropped Game 1 of their Big South Conference weekend series against Longwood in a 6-1 defeat at Winthrop Ballpark Friday night.
With the loss, Winthrop is now 26-22 (10-9 BSC) on the season, while Longwood improves to 29-21 (13-9 BSC).
Longwood struck first in the top of the 3rd when Michael Osinki hit a solo shot to left field.
The Lancers added another run in the top of the 5th when Alex Lewis hit a double to deep left center to knock in Sammy Miller for the 2-0 lead.
Longwood continued to extend their lead in the top of the 7th scoring two runs on three hits and one error.
The Lancers added another two runs in the top of the 7thon four hits for a 6-0 lead.
Winthrop got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 8th when Mark Lowrie grounded out sending Mitch Spires home, who had previously singled to left field.
Starting pitcher Sam Kmiec was credited with the loss on the night and is now 6-5 on the season with a 3.26 ERA. Kmiec went six innings allowing two earned runs while fanning four batters along the way.
The Eagles will continue the weekend series in Game 2 against Longwood Saturday, May 14, at Winthrop Ballpark beginning at 2:00 pm.
