Winthrop Edges East Tennessee State 2-1 in Non-Conference Action

Freshman thad Harris Improves Record to 5-3

JOHNSON CITY, TN— Winthrop's pitching staff scattered seven hits and struck out seven to help lead the Eagles to a 2-1 non-conference road victory over East Tennessee State Wednesday night.

With the win, Winthrop is now 23-20 (8-7 BSC) on the season, while East Tennessee State falls to 19-25 (6-9 SoCon).

Winthrop struck first scoring two runs in the top of the 2nd. Mark Lowrie led the Eagles off with a single to center field.  Roger Gonzalez followed with a single of his own. Jace Whitley was then walked to load the bases.  Lowrie scored the following at bat when Babe Thomas reached on a fielder's choice.  Kyle Edwards doubled to right field to score Thomas for the 2-0 Winthrop lead that the Eagles never relinquished.

East Tennessee State cut the margin to a one run deficit when Trey York hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 6th.

Six Winthrop hurlers saw action this evening with Thad Harris picking up the win for the Eagles to improve his record to 5-3 on the season. Zach Cook earned his seventh save of the year.

The Eagles will return to home to host Charleston Southern in a Big South Conference series this weekend.  Game 1 is scheduled for Friday, May 6 at Winthrop Ballpark, with first pitch set for 6:00 pm.
