Winthrop Takes Game One of Series 11-1 Over Charleston Southern

ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop's offense came alive as the Eagles' baseball squad took Game 1 of their weekend series against Charleston Southern with an 11-1 triumph Friday night at Winthrop Ballpark.

With the win, Winthrop is now 24-20 (9-7 BSC) on the season, while Charleston Southern falls to 15-28 (3-13 BSC).

The Eagles pounded out 15 hits giving starting pitcher Sam Kmiec plenty of support to post their third win in a row.

Charleston Southern struck first in the top of the 1st when Chris Singleton hit a solo shot to left field.  It would be the only run the Bucs would score on the night.

Winthrop quickly responded in the bottom of the 1st taking the lead at 2-1.  Tyler Asbill and Mitch Spires started the rally with back to back singles for the Eagles.  Asbill scored on a Mark Lowrie single to left field.  The Eagles took the lead when Roger Gonzalez reached on a throwing error and Spires scored.

The Eagles extended the lead by tallying another three runs in the bottom of the 4th connecting on four hits.  Grant English led the bottom half of the inning off with a double to left field.  Asbill later grounded out advancing English to third.  Spires followed with a single to right field scoring English.  Spires advanced to second when Anthony Paulsen reached on a bunt.  Spires then stole third while Lowrie was walked.  Gonzalez cleared the bases with a double to right field for a 5-1 Winthrop lead.

Winthrop added another run in the bottom of the 5th when Spires singled scoring Babe Thomas who had previously been walked.

Gonzalez and Whitley started the Eagles' half of the 6th off with back to back singles.  Thomas then walked to load the bases.  English knocked in two runners with a hard hit double to center field.  Kyle Edwards followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Thomas.  Asbill then sent English home with a single to center.

Kmiec was credited with the win and is now 6-4 on the season.  The crafty left-hander went a strong seven innings went a strong seven innings, striking out eight and allowing seven hits and just the one run.

The Eagles will look to continue their winning ways when they host Game 2 of the weekend series Saturday, May 6 at 6:00 pm at Winthrop Ballpark.
