Lacrosse Returns Home Wednesday To Host Presbyterian

ROCK HILL, SC – For the first time in nearly a month, the Winthrop lacrosse team will return home to Eagle field, hosting the Presbyterian Blue Hose Wednesday at 4 p.m. 

The Eagles are coming off a week break after defeating Liberty on Wednesday, March 30 17-6 to improve to 2-0 in the Big South and 11-2 overall. 

Senior Logan McCarthy broke out of a scoring slump in a big way against the Flames, netting four goals and adding one assist in the victory.  Katie Clark also tallied four goals while Shannon Gallagher recorded three goals and two assists.

Alaina Girani recorded five saves and allowed six goals against the Flames.  She brought her goals-against average down to 6.29 which leads the Big South and ranks her third in the country.  Her .544 save percentage also leads the conference and is second in Division I.

Presbyterian enters Wednesday's contest with a 2-9 record overall and a 0-3 mark in the Big South with a five-game losing streak.  The Blue Hose are coming off a 17-3 loss to High Point on Saturday.

Lauren Schaaf has led Presbyterian offensively with 21 goals.  Cady Roberts, who has only played in nine contests, is second on the team in point with 23 on 16 goals and seven assists.  Sophia Cuzzupe has seen the majority of the minutes for Presbyterian in goal this year, recording a 2-8 mark with a16.09 goals-against average and a .281 save percentage.

The Eagles and Blue Hose have met four times in Winthrop's three year history and Winthrop has been victorious in all four previous meetings including two in 2015.

Following Wednesday's afternoon contest, the Eagles will remain at home for a 1 p.m. Saturday tilt against the Lancers of Longwood.
