CHARLOTTE, NC—
The Winthrop Eagles' baseball squad dropped a 7-1 decision in the Red Ventures Collegiate Baseball Series at the BB&T Ballpark Tuesday night.

With the loss, Winthrop is now 16-13 (4-2) on the season, while Charlotte improves to 13-16 (3-6).

The 49ers struck first in the top of the 3rd when Logan Sherer singled to left field scoring Reece Hampton who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

Charlotte added another run in the top of the 4th when Derek Gallello scored on a wild pitch.

The Niners their lead to 3-0 when Zach Jarrett singled to left field scoring Sherer who had walked earlier in the inning..

Mark Lowrie led Winthrop's half of the 5th off with a single to center field, followed by back to back walks to load the bases.  Tyler Asbill was then walked to score Lowrie to get the Eagles on the score board.

Charlotte connected for back to back homers in the top of the 6th; a two run shot from Drew Ober followed by a Sherer long ball for the 6-1 lead.  This was the first time the Niners had hit back to back homeruns since they did it against George Washington on April 23, 2010

The 49ers' Sherer hit his second solo shot of the night for a 7-1 lead in the top of the 8th.

The Eagles' starting pitcher Riley Arnone pitched three innings allowing five hits and two runs, while walking no one and striking out four along the way.  Arnone picked up the loss and is now 2-2 on the season.

"This was a great opportunity for our program to play in a first class facility up here at BB&T Ballpark," said Head Coach Tom Riginos.  "I was hoping we would have played a little better and been able to feed off the momentum from this past weekend.  We need to get back on track with a very important Big South Conference Series at Presbyterian this weekend."

Winthrop will hit the road for a three-game Big South Conference series this weekend at Presbyterian College.  Game 1 is scheduled for Friday, April 8 at the PC Baseball Complex beginning at 3:00 pm.
