CLINTON, SC—The Winthrop Eagles' baseball team dropped Game 1 of the weekend series against the Presbyterian Blue Hose 4-3 at the PC Baseball Complex Friday afternoon.
With the loss, Winthrop is now 16-14 (4-3) on the season, while Presbyterian improves to 16-13 (3-4).
Winthrop grabbed the early lead scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the 1st. Mitch Spires started the rally for the Eagles hitting a single through the left side. Roger Gonzalez was then walked. Mike Lowrie then singled scoring Lowrie. Babe Thomas followed with a ground-rule double to score Gonzalez for the 2-0 lead.
The Blue Hose responded by tying the game in the bottom of the 2nd at 2-2.
The Eagles reclaimed the lead in the top of the 5th when Mitch Spires doubled and Anthony Paulsen singled to bring him Spires home.
Presbyterian tied the game once again in the bottom of the 6th at 3-3.
The Blue Hose' Jacob Midkiff hit a walkoff single to third base in the bottom of the 9th to win the game 4-3 for Presbyterian.
Winthrop's starting pitcher Sam Kmiec pitched 8.1 innings striking out three batters along the way. Kmiec received the loss in this game and is now 4-4 with a 3.81 ERA on the season.
Winthrop will look to bounce back from this loss in Game 2 of the weekend series against Presbyterian Saturday April, 9. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm at the PC Baseball Complex.
