Winthrop Baseball Squad Outslugs Davidson 15-6

DAVIDSON, NC— Mark Lowrie and Casey Parker drove in four runs each to lead the visiting Winthrop Eagle baseball squad to a 15-6 victory over Davidson Tuesday night at Wilson Field.

With the win, Winthrop is now 22-20 (8-7 BSC) on the season, while Davidson falls to 21-20 (8-6 A-10).

Davidson got on the board first when Sam Foy hit a solo homer down the right field line in the bottom of the 1st.

The Wildcats added another run in the bottom of the 2nd on an Eric Jones single through the left side scoring Brian Fortier for the 2-0 lead.

Casey Parker led off the 3rd inning with a single to right field for the Eagles.  Kyle Edwards followed with a single of his own to left field.  Tyler Asbill advanced both base runners with a sacrifice bunt.  Parker scored on a wild pitch cutting the lead to 2-1.

Anthony Paulsen began the 4th inning with a single to center field for Winthrop.  Mark Lowrie was walked the following at bat.  Roger Gonzalez then walked to load the bases with no outs.  Jace Whitley tied the game at 2-2 with a single to first base scoring Paulsen.  Babe Thomas followed with another single scoring Lowrie to put Winthrop out front 3-2.  Parker extended the lead to 4-2 with a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Gonzalez. 

Davidson regained the lead at 5-4 in the bottom of the 4th scoring three runs on four hits.

Winthrop rallied once again to regain the lead in the top of the 6th.  Asbill walked to begin the inning.  Paulsen later reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop.  Asbill scored when Lowrie reached on a fielder's choice to the pitcher.  Gonzalez then singled to left field scoring Paulsen for a 6-5 Eagles' lead.  Whitley was walked to load the bases and then Thomas followed with another walk to send Lowrie home.  Parker hit his second sacrifice fly of the afternoon to score Gonzalez for an 8-5 lead.

The Eagles began the 6th inning by loading the bases with no outs.  Asbill was first walked, then Spires singled to left center, followed by a Paulsen single to right.  Lowrie delivered with a single to right field to score two mor Winthrop runs.  Whitley later hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Paulsen.  Parker hit his fourth RBI of the afternoon when he knocked in a two run double to right center, scoring Thomas and Lowrie for a 13-5 advantage.

Davidson's Eric Jones led off the bottom of the 6th with a solo shot to left field to cut the lead to 13-6.

For the third straight inning Asbill led the inning off with a walk.  Spires followed with a single to left and Asbill scored on a throwing error by the left fielder.  Spires later scored on a Lowrie groundout for a 15-6 Winthrop lead heading into the 7th inning stretch. That ended the scoring for the evening and the Eagles picked up the road victory.

Winthrop's starting pitcher Reece Green went 3.1 innings allowing five earned runs.  Thad Harris earned the win out of the bullpen pitching 2.2 innings while only allowing one earned run, a solo homer.  Harris struck out two batters during his outing and is now 4-3 on the season with a 4.48 ERA.

The Eagles will conclude their road swing when they travel to face East Tennessee State next Wednesday, May 4, at Thomas Stadium in Johnson City, TN with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 pm.
