ASHEVILLE, NC—The Winthrop Eagles' baseball team lost Game 3 of the Big South Conference Series against UNC Asheville 10-7 Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field, after Winthrop clinched the series with a doubleheader sweep yesterday.
With the loss, Winthrop is now 21-20 (8-7 BSC) on the season, while UNC Asheville improves to 14-27 (5-10 BSC).
Winthrop struck first in the top of the 2nd when Mitch Spires hit a sacrifice fly scoring Roger Gonzalez who was previously walked.
The Bulldogs quickly responded to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the 2nd.
UNC Asheville extended to a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the 3rd when they scored four runs on four hits.
Gonzalez hit his second homer of the series in the top of the 4th to cut the Asheville lead to 5-2.
The Bulldogs continued to pile on the runs when they rallied for another four runs in the bottom of the 4th on three hits.
Winthrop began to chip away at the 9-2 lead when they put up two runs on three hits in the top of the 6th. Mark Lowrie and Jace Whitley both singled and were later sent home on a Spires double to deep left center.
The Eagles added another two runs in the top of the 7th when Lowrie singled to left field scoring Derron Davis who was previously walked. After singling to right field, Anthony Paulsen scored on a fielding error cutting the deficit to 9-6.
UNC Asheville added an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th. Winthrop did everything they could to rally in the top of the 9th but were only able to score one run on an error for a 10-7 final with the Bulldogs coming out victorious.
Starting pitcher Thad Harris received a no decision in this matchup, pitching 2.2 innings allowing five earned runs. Riley Arnone was given the loss after pitching 4.0 innings of relief.
The Eagles will continue their road swing when they travel to face Davidson this Tuesday, April 26 at the Wilson Field beginning at 6:00 pm.
