Winthrop Defense Stifles Campbell in 15-4 Victory Saturday

ROCK HILL, SCShannon Gallagher netted four goals Saturday and the Winthrop defense limited Campbell to only 14 shots and four goals in a 15-4 victory over the Camels.

With the victory, the Eagles' perfect conference record remained intact at 6-0 as Winthrop moved to 15-2 overall.  The Camels fell to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the Big South with the loss.

It took the Eagles a little over seven minutes to get the offense going but it they did, the goals came quickly.  In a span of only 2:47, the game went from scoreless to 4-0 in favor of Winthrop as Gallagher netted three goals while Katie Clark grabbed the other.

Campbell netted one of their two first-half goals with 10:23 remaining but Winthrop took the next three as Gallagher, Clark and Kristen Shriver each contributed, putting the Eagles up 7-1.  The Camels got within 7-2 before the half.

The Eagles allowed Campbell no opportunity to get back into the contest as Winthrop scored the first six goals of the second half.  Shriver and Allie Yeager each grabbed two goals while Clark and Krista Frowein each netted one, putting Winthrop up 13-2 with 12:22 remaining.

Campbell scored their only two goals of the second half at 7:26 and 2:02, to avoid posting its lowest goal total of the season.  The nation's leading scorer, Loren Day was limited to only one goal on five shots and also turned the ball over five times.

Gallagher did it all Saturday, netting her four goals on seven shots, also adding one assist.  Gallagher also led the Eagles in ground balls with four and caused turnovers with five.  Shriver finished with three goals and one assist while Yeager and Clark each totaled three goals.

Hayley Krause led the team with four draw controls.  Goalie Alaina Girani made six saves while allowing just the four goals improving both her save percentage and goals-against average.

Winthrop will hit the final week of the regular season in a tie for first place in the conference.  The Eagles will have a road contest Wednesday at Coastal Carolina before returning home on Sunday, April 24 for a showdown with the High Point Panthers as the regular-season title and hosting rights to the conference tournament will be on the line.
