CONWAY, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team earned a hard-fought come-from-behind victory 8-6 over Coastal Carolina Wednesday evening.
The Eagles (16-2, 7-0) are now set to host High Point on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a matchup of conference unbeatens. The winner of Sunday's contest will earn the Big South regular season title and hosting rights for the conference semifinals and championship.
Coastal (8-6, 4-3) grabbed the first goal of the game less than two minutes into the contest. Kristen Shriver tied the game on a feed from Shannon Gallagher with 21:15 on the clock. The game slowed down greatly and the Chanticleers scored twice over the next 13 minutes to take a 3-1 lead with 8:33 remaining.
Gallagher scored two unassisted goals at 5:45 and 2:37 to tie the contest at 3-3. Coastal was able to take a 4-3 lead into the break, netting a goal with only 63 second remaining.
Winthrop came out strong to start the second half, scoring the first three. Danielle Ellis grabbed the first goal of the half and then Logan McCarthy scored the next two to give the Eagles a 6-4 lead with 17:16 remaining. The Chanticleers tallied the next two goals to tie the game at 6-6 with 10:12 remaining.
Gallagher again came up with a big goal, this time on a free-position attempt, putting Winthrop up 7-6 with 8:30 on the clock. The Eagles then slowed the game down. Allie Yeager gave the Eagles a little breathing room on a feed from Kristen Shriver with only 2:16 remaining. Coastal was limited on scoring chances over the final two minutes as the Eagles picked up the victory.
Gallagher finished with three goals and one assist to go along with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. McCarthy netted two goals while Yeager, Shriver and Ellis each added one. Hayley Krause led the team with five draw controls while Shriver and Alaina Girani tied for the team lead with four ground balls. Girani finished with seven saves including five in the second half.
The Eagles outshot the Chanticleers 32-17 and won the ground ball battle 28-15. The two sides were even 8-8 on draw controls. Neither side had good production on the 8-meter line as the Eagles went 1-for-8 and Coastal went 1-for-5.
