BOILING SPRINGS, NC – Senior Logan McCarthy scored a career-high five goals Wednesday evening as the Winthrop lacrosse team remained unbeaten in conference play with a 19-7 victory over Gardner-Webb.
McCarthy's game-high five goals came on seven shots. Shannon Gallagher also notched five points on three goals and two assists.
Kristen Shriver and Danielle Ellis each recorded four points as Shriver netted three goals and assisted on one other and Ellis totaled four assists. Shriver led Winthrop with five draw controls while Katherine Judge and Hayley Krause tied for the team lead with five draw controls each.
Winthrop (14-2, 5-0) got off to a quick start, going up 3-0 in the first 2:30 of the contest. Gardner-Webb (3-11, 1-5) pulled one back and was able to stay close through a majority of the first half. The Eagles led only 6-3 with just under eight minutes on the clock. Over the last 4:09 of the first half, however, Winthrop went on a 5-1 run and took an 11-4 lead into the break.
The Eagles continued their momentum into the second half as Winthrop scored the first five goals of the second half to go up 16-4 with 22:33 remaining in the contest. Gardner-Webb was able to find the net three times in the second half but Winthrop's lead was comfortable for the 19-7 victory.
Winthrop fired off a season-high 41 shots with 35 being directed on cage while the Bulldogs were limited to only 12 shots. Gardner-Webb won the ground-ball battle 32-28 while the Eagles owned the circle, taking 17 of 28 draw controls.
Eagle goalie Alaina Girani finished with four saves while Gardner-Webb's netminder Cassidy McDowell recorded 16.
Winthrop will head back to Eagle Field for its next contest on Saturday when the Eagles host Campbell at 1 p.m.
