Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Falls To Albany, #16/17 Kentucky On Day 2 Of Winthrop Inv.

ROCK HILL,SC--  Winthrop softball dropped both its games on day two of the Winthrop Invitational as it fell 10-8 to Albany and 11-0 to #16/17 Kentucky, Saturday afternoon on Terry Field.

The Eagles fall to 8-10 on the year as they wrap up this weekend's action on Sunday at 10 a.m. when they face Kentucky.

In the opening game of the day the Eagles rallied twice from multiple-run deficits to take the lead but Albany scored three in the seventh to pull off the win.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the second, Winthrop got things going with two outs as Tara Loken, Kim Ryder and Haley Zuehlke all drew walks to load the bases for freshman Morgan Lowers, who delivered. Lowers doubled to left field, scoring Loken and Ryder. Then Paige Haley doubled to center to score Zuehlke and Lowers to take the 4-3 lead.

The Great Danes came right back to take the lead with four runs in the top of the third behind a couple of bases loaded walks and a leadoff home run.

The lead was short lived as Winthrop posted four runs in the bottom of the fourth for an 8-7 lead. Haley singled with one out and scored when Leah Young ripped a home run, her fifth of the season. Megan Winningham stepped up and hit a solo shot for back-to-back homers for the Eagles and the fourth run of the inning came on a Zuehlke RBI single that scored K.J. Uyeno.

M. Bump tripled with one out to tie the game in the top of the seventh and then with two outs K. Costello put Albany on top 10-8 with a two-run home run.

Winningham pushed her hitting streak to seven games with the home run against Albany before going 0-for-2 in the loss to Kentucky. Lowers, Haley and Young all had two RBI in the game against Albany. Haley was the only Eagle with multiple hits as she finished with three, tying her career-best.

Wildcats pitcher Meagan Prince no-hit the Eagles in the 11-0 loss, but Winningham looked like she had broken up the no-hit bid in the 4th inning. Winningham ripped a shot down the right field line that looked to be headed for a double but the ball struck the umpire past the first base bag and bounced over toward second base and the ball was picked up and throw to first to get Winningham.

Young got hit by a pitch in her first at-bat in the loss to Kentucky as she extended her streak of reaching base to eight straight.

The Wildcats posted three runs in the first and five in the second on their way to the 11-0 win in five innings.
