HIGH POINT, NC—The Winthrop Eagles' baseball squad fell 7-2 in their Big South Conference opener to High Point at Williard Stadium Thursday night.
With the loss, Winthrop falls to 11-11 (0-1) on the season, while High Point is now 17-5 (4-0).
The Eagles grabbed the early lead in the top of the 1st when Anthony Paulsen flied out to center field sending Tyler Asbill home, who had singled earlier in the inning.
High Point took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 2nd. The first two batters Hunter Lee and Josh Green were walked. They were sent home consecutively, Lee from a Dominic Fazio single up the middle and then Green from a Carson Jackson single to shallow center field.
Winthrop tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the 4th when Grant English doubled down the right field line scoring Jace Whitley, who reached on a wild pitch after striking out.
High Point regained the lead in the bottom of the 5th when Chris Clare singled and was later sent home from a Tim Mansfield single to center field.
The Panthers added another four runs in the bottom of the 7th off of two hits and were assisted by two errors to extend to a 7-2 lead.
The Eagles failed to rally for any offense as High Point held for the 7-2 victory.
Winthrop will look to bounce back in Game 2 of the series tomorrow, Mar. 25 at 6 pm.
