HIGH POINT, NC—The Winthrop Eagles' baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to High Point in Game 2 of the weekend series at Williard Stadium Friday night.
With the loss, Winthrop falls to 11-12 (0-2) on the season, while High Point is now 18-5 (5-0).
It was a pitchers' duel until High Point struck first in the bottom of the 5th. Hunter Lee hit a sacrifice fly that scored Austen Zente, who had reached earlier on a fielding error.
Mark Lowrie led off the Eagles' 6th inning with a single to right field. Lowrie later scored when Brandon Fite singled to right field to even the score at 1-1.
High Point then regained the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the 6th when Drew Fopeano singled scoring Tim Mansfield who had walked earlier.
The Eagles tied the game once again at 2-2 in the top of the 6th when Jace Whitley singled up the middle scoring Mitch Spires, who also singled earlier in the inning.
In the bottom of the 7th the Panthers regained the lead when JJ Woodard hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Luke Parker for the 3-2 lead.
Spencer Brown hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 8th to put the Panthers up 4-2.
Winthrop was unable to rally from the two run deficit and the game ended in a 4-2 final.
The Eagles' starting right hander Zach Sightler pitched 6.1 innings for Winthrop only allowing two runs.
Winthrop will look to salvage a game in the series in Game 3 tomorrow, Mar. 26 beginning at 3:00 pm.
