Softball Returns To Terry Field For Weekend Series With Radford

ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop softball returns to Terry Field after 11 straight games on the road as it will host Radford in a three-game series this weekend beginning Friday evening.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS RADFORD
Winthrop and Radford have met 73 times, which is the third most games against a Big South opponents for the Eagles. Since 2009 the series has been dominated by the Highlanders having taken the regular season series with the Eagles six of the past seven seasons. Last year the team's split a doubleheader in Radford, VA but the final game of the series was rained out. The Eagles are just 6-19 against Radford since taking a series in Radford in 2008. Radford's recent dominance of the series has pushed its all-time series lead to 42-31.
 
A GLANCE AT THE EAGLES
Winthrop is looking for its first Big South win and to end a nine-game losing streak. The Eagles are coming off two losses at Presbyterian College on Wednesday in which the team totaled 15 hits and stranded 13 runners. Winthrop was shutout in 13 innings until Leah Young broke through in the 7th with a two-run double. The Eagles hit the ball hard, but couldn't get the break they needed with runners in scoring position. So far this season the Eagles are 8-5 at home while batting .283 as a team and scoring 5.6 runs per game. Junior Paige Haley, who is second on the team with a .309 average, is hitting .400 at home with 10 runs and seven RBI. Leah Young is hitting .333 at home with five of her eight home runs at Terry Field and 16 RBI. Redshirt-sophomore Megan Winningham bounced back from her weekend (1-for-10) to go 5-for-7 in the doubleheader at PC on Wednesday. That performance shot her into a team-leading .344 average on the year.
 
A GLANCE AT THE HIGHLANDERS
Radford opened its Big South Conference schedule on the road and captured the series at Charleston Southern as it swept the doubleheader on Sunday before dropping the finale 8-5. Radford outscored the Buccaneers 7-2 on Saturday behind strong pitching performances from Abby Morrow and Kayla Huffman. The pre-conference schedule heading into league play was a competitive one for Radford as it picked up wins over Georgetown, Pittsburgh, UNC Wilmington, Virginia, East Carolina and Marshall. Coming into this week's action the Highlanders had the second best RPI in the Big South at 85. Their 17 wins are tied with PC for the most by a school in the league. Offensively the Highlanders are second in the Big South with a .296 batting average and have the third most extra base hits with 66 with a lead-leading 42 doubles and tied for first with eight triples.

BIG SOUTH HOME OPENERS
Winthrop captured its first home game in league play in 2015 with a 4-2 victory over Longwood. That game was also the conference opener for the Eagles as well. Winthrop went on to drop the series 2-1 and has not won its first home series in the Big South since 2010 when it opened its home schedule against league opponents with a doubleheader sweep of PC.
 
HEAVY ROAD SLATE FOR EAGLES IN CONFERENCE PLAY
The Eagles opened its Big South Conference schedule on the road, which is where it will spend the majority of its time against league competition this season. Winthrop has a total of 24 league games scheduled and 15 of those will be played away from Terry Field. Already having played at Liberty, the Eagles will also travel to PC, Longwood, Campbell and Gardner-Webb for league series. The Eagles will finish the regular season with its final seven games on the road against league opponents.
 
WHAT'S ON DECK FOR THE EAGLES?
Winthrop hits the road again for five straight starting with a doubleheader at Charlotte on Tuesday starting at 4:30 p.m. The doubleheader wasn't part of the original schedule and was added a few weeks back. Following its non-conference twin bill, the Eagles will travel to Farmville, VA to take on Longwood for a three-game series starting with a single-game on Friday and the doubleheader on Saturday.
 
EAGLES TO HOST NATIONALLY TELEVISED GAME AGAINST COASTAL APRIL 8
Winthrop's single-game on April 8 is the series opener against Coastal Carolina and that game will air live on ESPNU at 6:30 p.m. It will be the Eagles first game on ESPNU since the 2013 Big South Championship game on Terry Field against Longwood.
 
WINTHROP HOSTING BIG SOUTH TOURNAMENT
The Winthrop Softball Complex and Terry Field will be the site of the 2016 Big South Conference Softball Championship May 11-14. It will be the 14th time the tournament will be hosted by Winthrop and first time since 2013. Ticket prices will be announced at a later date. Winthrop has been to the Big South Championship game 12 times, including eight of the last 15 tournaments.
