th meetings between PC and Winthrop. The all-time series is tied at 12-12 with and in the last 10 meetings each team has won five times. Last season the Eagles and Blue Hose split four meetings as the Eagles took the regular season series 2-1 before falling 6-1 to PC in the conference tournament.
A GLANCE AT THE EAGLESWinthrop is looking to end a seven-game losing streak and capture its first league win after it dropped its first three at Liberty last weekend. The Eagles have struggled at the plate during the winning streak, batting just .228 while averaging just over two runs per game in that stretch. Redshirt
Leah Young has been one of the few bright spots at the plate as she's batting .400 over the course of the losing streak and has three runs, two home runs and six RBI. She has reached base in a career-best 20 straight games, which is the longest streak since Megan Chapman reached in 22 straight in 2009. The streak of 20 is tied for the 4
th best since 2006. Sophomore
Tara Loken, who is batting .220 on the year, is hitting .333 over her last six games.
Paige Haley remains the team's top hitter at .311 as she leads the team with 17 runs as well. Young's 24 RBI on the year lead the team, are just two shy of her personal best in a single-season which she set last season and the fourth most this season in the Big South. Winthrop's trio of freshmen pitchers continue to get experience as they make up ¾ of the staff.
Kiley Majette (11 starts) and
Chace Helms (4 starts) are likely start against PC.
Keleigh Romine, who is second on the team with 14 appearances, also has four starts and could possibly start as well.
A GLANCE AT THE BLUE HOSEPC enters the doubleheader having dropped its conference opening series 2-1 to Coastal Carolina at home. Those were the first losses in six home games for the Blue Hose this season. The weekend series actually extended to Monday morning as the two teams braved the cold temperatures as Coastal won 3-0 thanks to three solo home runs. PC has won eight of its last 12 contests and is averaging 4.4 runs per game while batting .256 as a team. Megan Anderson leads PC in batting at .390 (4
th in the BSC) as she has 11 runs, six home runs and 20 RBI on the year. Kersten Legacki is second on the team in batting at .294 with 15 runs and 12 RBI. Hope Rogers is tied for the team-lead with 20 RBI as she also has 15 runs and a team-high eight home runs. Last season Rogers was 7-for-14 with four runs and five RBI in four games against the Eagles. Erin Ruff, who is hitting .259 with 14 runs and 12 RBI on the year, was 4-for-15 against the Eagles in 2015 with five runs, two home runs and five RBI. Sydney Seigler and Katie Brown make up the majority of the starts for the Blue Hose. Seigler is 5-6 with a 3.67 ERA and a team-high 13 starts as she's recorded 57 strikeouts with 23 walks in 82.0 innings. Brown is 8-5 with a 3.69 ERA and has struck out 26 with 21 walks in 62.2 innings. As a team the Blue Hose rank 3
rd in the league with 27 home runs and is tied for third with the most extra base hits with 60.
EAGLES TESTED HEADING INTO CONFERENCE PLAYThe Eagles have gone through a tough schedule both against competition and travel so far this year. The Eagles have faced #12 Georgia twice, #15 Kentucky twice, and most recently top-ranked Florida. The three of them are a combined 73-7. There are seven of Winthrop's opponents this season ranked in the Top 50 of win-loss percentage. Eight of them are in the Top 50 of batting average, seven for earned run average and six of them in scoring. Of Winthrop's 20 NCAA D1 opponents this season, 14 of them have a winning record as of Mar. 21.
HEAVY ROAD SLATE FOR EAGLES IN CONFERENCE PLAYThe Eagles opened its Big South Conference schedule on the road, which is where it will spend the majority of its time against league competition this season. Winthrop has a total of 24 league games scheduled and 15 of those will be played away from Terry Field. Already having played at Liberty, the Eagles will also travel to PC, Longwood, Campbell and Gardner-Webb for league series. The Eagles will finish the regular season with its final seven games on the road against league opponents.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE EAGLES?Winthrop returns home for a conference series with Radford beginning Friday after playing 11 straight games on the road. Winthrop will play nine of its next 16 games at home before finishing the year with seven straight on the road. The Eagles will host a Radford squad that is tied for second in the Big South at 2-1 and has an overall record of 16-7, which is the best winning percentage and most wins by any team in the league.
WINTHROP HOSTING BIG SOUTH TOURNAMENTThe Winthrop Softball Complex and Terry Field will be the site of the 2016 Big South Conference Softball Championship May 11-14. It will be the 14
th time the tournament will be hosted by Winthrop and first time since 2013. Ticket prices will be announced at a later date. Winthrop has been to the Big South Championship game 12 times, including eight of the last 15 tournaments.
